I’ve fallen behind in the blogging department this week, leading up to the amazing #IMPRINTPRESENTS @DAVIDCHOE event yesterday. My bad. The event was incredible. Afterwards, I went to check out the new Kevin Lyons exhibition at HVW8 Gallery in West Hollywood. It was awesome. You should check out the wall of monsters he did in the lot at the back. I’ve been a Kevin Lyons fanboy since way back. Bring back the Natural Born brand!
SLVDR is an excellent SoCal men’s label with impeccable attention to design & detail, paired with unusually accessible price points. It’s well worth checking out. This latest video from Andrew Truong documents the waterproof quality of their Fall ’13 Aperture Jacket. If you’re interested in learning more about SLVDR, check out my interview with Creative Director Rob Myers for Imprint Culture Lab. [Watch Video]
Check out this really eclectic and ultimately very funky mix of epic covers via Philly-based DJs Lil’Dave and Personify called Gotcha Covered. Available both streaming and for download. Opens up with a great cover of “Slipping into Darkness” and quickly moves on to a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up,” and it just keeps getting better from there somehow. Via Soul-Sides.
Earlier in the year, epically awesome artist MADSTEEZ (whom I saw working during POW! WOW! back in February) went down to San Diego to beautify the nice new Knockaround HQ digs. He painted one of Knockaround’s greatest sources of inspiration, the inimitable Magnum P.I., one of the greatest TV characters of the ’80s. Earlier in the year MADSTEEZ painted a Bill Cosby at The Hundreds HQ in LA, and then an Eazy-E mural at Armada Skis HQ in Huntington Beach too. Seems he’s on a rad warehouse roll! [Watch Video]
If you haven’t had the chance to visit the awesome retail/gallery/boutique spot HutchLA in Verdugo Village yet, you’re in luck. They’ve just put out a great video which captures the amazing vibe of the space that Grizz and his team have created. And it also highlights all the amazing CRYPTIK art which was installed for the opening event. Check the video and see what you missed! Also, check the flyer for the closing party which is going down tomorrow. [Watch Video]
Beyond Eden is “A multi-gallery event celebrating the New Contemporary art scene.” It’s a two day art fair event going down this weekend, and the participating galleries include Thinkspace (LA), CoproGallery (Santa Monica), C.A.V.E. Gallery (Venice), and Spoke Art (San Francisco). I know my buddy Shark Toof will be showing at Thinkspace (sneak peek after the jump!) alongside about 40 other talented creatives like Amy Sol, Ekundayo, Meggs, and more!
Shadow Type, Classic Three-Dimensional Lettering by Steven Heller and Louise Fili is a visually beautiful and incredibly thorough investigation of monumental shadow typefaces from Princeton Architectural Press. The content is divided into sections by nationality – American, Italian, French, British, with a Miscellaneous section – and each includes numerous stunning examples of signage, advertising, posters, movie titles, and of course, rare typefaces. The artistic quality of the lettering contained within this title is quite amazing. [Read More / View Images]
Tomorrow evening Reed Space are holding an awesome fundraiser for Love For Leni, a campaign to support Jerry and Amanda Hsiao, of the Staple Design/Reed Space family, whose 5-month-old daughter Leni has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. A bevy of amazing artists have contributed work for the event, including the likes of Aaron De La Cruz, Sophia Chang, Samuel Rodriguez, and many more. If you’re in the area, go and support Leni and pick up some great art in the process.

The delivery includes a range of great-looking Ultra Suede caps in Fall colors, as well as Avocado, 99 Fishes, and Birds hats, and some amazing new wallets. If you’re interested in Ivan and his brand, check out the interview we did for Imprint Culture Lab last year.
