Apprentice / Hatter

Los Angeles-based artist Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) just released two new prints. “Apprentice” depicts Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice in Disney’s 1940 animation, Fantasia, while “Hatter” portrays The Mad Hatter from Disney’s 1951 cartoon classic, Alice in Wonderland, based on Lewis Carroll’s famous novel.

Artists can’t afford the Arts District

This timely article from the LA Times looks at how two years of steady development in the Arts District (and in DTLA in general, really) has priced most creatives out of the area, ironically. I have some artistically talented friends who’ve been displaced by this trend. Since I live a stone’s throw from the Arts District this is all very interesting (and slightly worrying) to watch. That said, the number of incredible coffee shops and eateries has skyrocketed at the same time. Come for the art, stay for the $9 avocado toast (seriously).

Urban Fruit

Urban Fruit is an interesting documentary about the “urban gardening” backyard food production revolution taking place here in Los Angeles. It’s funny because my wife and I are quite serious about our vegetable garden, and lots of our friends and family are too. LA really is a great place to grow your own food. Lots of smart people think this approach could be the solution to the problems created by big agriculture. Growing your own organically means you know exactly what you’re eating too.
