Studies show that about 1% of the population display the characteristics of a psychopath, but if you believe television, you already know everyone even slightly weird is a potential major psycho. There are shows about psychopaths who hunt psychopaths, so obviously they must be absolutely everywhere. Maybe you’ve even worked for or dated one! But how can we be sure? The term “psychopath” was first used in 1847, and its meaning has evolved somewhat over the years since – as have testing methods. British author Julian Rothenstein has compiled many of them in Psychobook: Games, Tests, Questionnaires, Histories – a fun new title from Princeton Architectural Press which looks at classic testing methods, from word-association games to inkblots to personality tests. Interestingly, it also presents some brand new reimagined tests created by contemporary artists and writers. [See More]
The homie LA-based artist Benjie Escobar just released this awesome Art lapel pin which relates to his uber-popular Art Venn Diagram from a couple years back. The one that has been re-Tumbled like ten million times and ripped off a bunch too. All fine compliments to a great design. Available in his online store.
Happy Monday! Here’s an awesome article from Fast Co. Exist about Los Angeles-based Native American artist Jaque Fragua.
This week’s T-Shirt of the Week goes to this fun new graphic from Speedy’s Liquor. California Love positions deceased rapper Tupac Shakur and The Smiths frontman Morrissey such that they seem to be in a romantic embrace. Named for the Tupac hit song, I was kind of surprised at how upset some people got about it all on social media.
This video by Dress Code is kind of a trip…I’ve been lucky enough to meet “L.A.’s Oldest Manual Elevator Operator” and take a ride in his elevator, several times. He’s an amazing guy – sort of an old school gent, making new school friends every day. It’s incredible to think of all the friends he’s made going up and down the floors of the Art Deco building at 5514 Wilshire Blvd over the last 40 years. Via Booooooom TV.
The latest release from ridiculously talented Los Angeles-based artist CRYPTIK is out tomorrow at 8AM PST. Peep the ‘Satya’ Limited Edition Hanging Scroll, 14″ x 24″, in an edition of 150.
Some more great coverage of the recent POW! WOW! LONG BEACH 2016 mural festival I helped produce, via Havoc TV. This clip features incredibly talented Hawaii-based artist Defer, who really has a lot of great things to say about the event, and really nails how much extra work goes into it. It also features amazing French artist Kashink, who I was lucky enough to meet during the event. There’s a chat super-accomplished photographer, Martha Cooper, who was also in Long Beach, documenting the event. And last but not least, a visit with my new friend Pantonio, who painted at the wonderful Aquarium of the Pacific.
This week’s T-Shirt of the Week selection is arguably slightly unscrupulous on my part – it’s another tee from the new Selector x 50 Words On Grey capsule collection currently available in the 50 Words On Grey online shop. The original lettering for this Best By Any Test tee was done by my talented friend Max “86era” Lord, outta Russia.
Here are three great new air freshener additions to the Typo Shop, by accomplished Japanese artist Usugrow, via sweet-scented Los Angeles-based brand Stay Fresh. I’ve been a fan of his work for years (at least a decade) and I was lucky enough to see him in action during POW! WOW! Japan last year, and also caught his most recent solo show in Harajuku, which was nothing short of impressive. [See More]
