Tom at Melbourne’s Illusive record label put me onto some interesting new music out of Australia. Diafrix are two emcees, Momo and Azmarion, who both hail from Africa and emigrated to Australia, and producer Ptero Stylus, from rural New South Wales. Concrete Jungle is essentially a hip-hop album with eclectic influences, incorporating elements of jazz, funk, rock, reggae, and African music. My favorite tracks on the album are the ones where they depart from standard hip-hop the most, and embrace African sounds and Caribbean sounds, such as “African Affair,” “Birth of Hip Hop,” and “Mama Africa.”
