MULTIPLE SIGNATURES is a fascinating new exploration of graphic design today, courtesy of Michael Rock, co-founder of the famous 2 x 4 agency, known for their creative work for giant brands such as Chanel, Harvard, MoMA, Nike, Prada, and Procter & Gamble. The hefty paperback is just out from the good people at Rizzoli. Arguably aimed at serious design students and professionals rather than the casual design fan, MULTIPLE SIGNATURES is actually a collection of essays grouped into logical thematic batches. The essays were compiled by Rock, and feature his own words, alongside those of Rem Koolhaas, Rick Poynor, Mark Wigley, Susan Sellers, Georgianna Stout, and more. The essays investigate important design concepts, such authorship, as well as a wide spectrum of 2 x 4 design projects, and even examines common cliches in modern design. This logically leads into a look at design from the perspective of the end-user, and the ways that they play a role in design too.

I was lucky enough to meet Austrian artist NYCHOS while I was out in Hawaii for POW WOW 2013. He was there doing an amazing mural alongside SoCal artist Jeff Soto, which was pretty amazing. Hypebeast did their latest episode of their great Pen & Paper series on him.

Outside the Box

This recent LA Times article “‘Wheaties’ artists get creative outside the box” by Hugh Hart takes a look at the current state of wheatpasted art here in LA. It’s great to see a focus on ABCNT (interviewed) featured, and the article also mentions CRYPTIK (interviewed) and Shark Toof too. I’ve not heard of wheatpaste artists as “wheaties” before so that was educational.

Phony Art Pub Scam

If you are a fan of The Beatles, and more specifically, their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP, and you are also a fan of underground-ish hip-hop, then you might really dig this project from the Columbus, OH, based emcee Copywrite. The release is called Carbon Copy’s Phony Art Pub Scam and it features original new rhymes over the original old instrumentals. Fun times.

Imprint in Prints

The Imprint Culture Lab website has a Photo Recap from our recent creative conference, which was held in the historic Edison Theatre in downtown Long Beach. The post was put together by our colleague Martin Wong, and it features great photography by Ben Clark who shot everything on the day of.
