T-Files 038: ABCNT
It’s been quite a while since I last posted an interview here. I recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of LA’s most prolific street artists. If you live in or around the City of Angels, you’ve almost definitely seen the work of ABCNT wheat pasted heavily across the landscape. Unlike myself, he is a man of action, and of few words, but read on to learn about life, the universe, and Iranian Vampire Westerns.
Where are you today? Rebel Headquarters, at The Young Turks.
What are you working on? Balance, happiness, enlightenment, finding a good meal.. the usual.
What was your introduction to art? Movies in the 80s, music videos, graffiti, Persian calligraphy at the crib, Islamic art at my Uncle’s house..
Are you self taught or formally educated? Both. I still go through tutorials for things all the time.
When did you decide to pursue it full time? After I graduated from college I had no choice and so far so good.
What are some of the themes you’re exploring in your art? Leftist & progressive ideas, anarchism, self empowerment, to question power and authority.
Is your art political? Yeah, straight up. Everything is political. If you think your art isn’t and you’re buying time with style, then politically you’re nihilistic. I’d rather be more direct.
Where do you find inspiration? Current events, music, art, history, crime, psychedelics, nature, love, hate.. my dog.
What’s next? Have you got anything coming up you’d like to mention?
Working on an Iranian Vampire Western thats gonna be fucking ill. A new mix is in the works..Hit+Run‘s 7 year anniversary. Collaborations with Hutch LA which will be opening soon. A few surprises too..
