The History of Island Records: Keep on Running by Suzette Newman and Chris Salewicz is an impressive new hardcover from Rizzoli which aims to be the definitive tome when it comes to Chris Blackwell’s Island Records. The label was founded in Jamaica and launched Bob Marley and the Wailers into international superstardom, and released many other classic reggae albums before picking up a slew of impressive international acts including Traffic, Nick Drake, Cat Stevens, U2, Eric B & Rakim, Amy Winehouse, and many more. Until they were sold to Polygram in 1989, it was the largest independent record label on the planet. The book features a preface from Blackwell himself, and then embarks on a visual journey through the history of the label and its hefty catalog. It’s definitely one of the best music-related books I’ve managed to get my hands on lately, and it’s out in September.
